Unlock for 05.12.01 Baseband on iPhone 3.1.3 to be released soon

George Hotz has confirmed via his twitter account that he has a working exploit which can unlock the latest 05.12.01 baseband which Apple bundled when they released iPhone 3.1.3 for iPhone and iPod touch earlier this month.

Last week, another iPhone hacker and developer named Sherif Hashim also found an exploit for the latest baseband. This exploit was sent to iPhone Dev-Team and they confirmed that it was working but didn’t give any ETA on when or if they are going to release a tool which is going to unlock iPhone 3.1.3 05.12.01 Baseband for iPhone 3G and 3GS. Maybe they don’t want to waste this all important exploit for this minor update and instead will use it when the major update such as iPhone 3.2 or iPhone 4.0 is released with the next-gen iPhone 4G.

iPhone 4.0 beta to be seen soon–as early as Jan 26th ‘10

A French site M4Ever is claiming that we might get to see iPhone 4.0 beta as early as 26/27th of this month, when Apple is rumored to be announcing the iSlate. MacRumors covered this rumor and shared this bit of information:
Several sources give two pieces of information concerning the famous Apple tablet: In late January, in addition to its tablet, Cupertino should have a beta of iPhone OS 4, accompanied by an SDK. Also there will be a “simulator” specifically adapted for the tablet. Evidently, the major novelty of the SDK therefore concerns the interface, making it easier for developers to adapt to different screen resolutions. The newiPhone could also benefit from a higher pixel density.

iPhone 4G (3,1) Being Tested in San Francisco

Developers Pandav informed MacRumors, thanks to the scripts of statistics included in their application, have managed to record tracks for a new iPhone model, not yet released.

Even PinchMedia, which offers a system of statistics and analysis on the use of software, has noticed the same thing and the new device is identified with the code “iPhone3, 1″. Therefore very clear that Apple is already running the first tests with regard to the next model.

This hypothesis is also accredited by past events, since back in October 2008 where we found the first traces “iPhone2, 1″ representing 3GS model and which was officially launched only 8 months later.

Few details about iPhone 4G have been making rounds, the big one being multi-core processor that would significantly enhance performance of iPhone.

Samsung Marina Targets Women Mobile Phone Users

The handsets of the LadyPhone line-up of Samsung, as the name suggests, are aimed at the fairer sex.
One of the latest installments to the series is the Allure S S5050 that got released mid summer last year. The rumor has it the manufacturer is working on a new addition to the same range, codenamed the Samsung Marina. According to the Dutch website MobileCowboys, the cell phone will probably be a high-end device and that´s pretty much all we know about it at this time… no pictures or specifications. We suppose that in step with the concept of the series, it will rely on appealing appearance to win over ladies and probably come in a proper color solution. We wonder if Samsung´s plans include announcement of the handset next month, when the manufacturer is expected to reveal more details about their new, open source operating system called bada.

Apple to Launch Smaller ‘Worldmode’ iPhone?

A report by OTR Global says Apple will launch a new ‘worldmode’ iPhone in Q3 2010 with a smaller 2.8″ screen.

The report which was provided to AppleInsider cites sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain. It claims that Apple has contracted Asustek subsidiary Pegatron to build a new hybrid phone which will work will all global handset carriers whether UMTS or CDMA.

Apparently the phone will gain compatibility with CDMA2000 networks (including Verizon) while still keeping compatibility with UMTS 3G networks using a new hybrid chip produced by Qualcomm.

The phone is also said to have a smaller 2.8″ screen. Interestingly, in June, 2008 component photos of a smaller 2.8″ screen were posted by iLounge. A Taiwanese company claimed they were going to be used in an upcoming iPhone.

The OTR report also claims that despite Verizon’s ad campaign that attacked Apple the company did manage to hammer out an agreement with Apple to sell the iPhone within the year.

iPhone 4G To Be Equipped With RFID Reader

According to Einar Rosenberg, the CTO of Narian Technologies, Apple has begun experimenting with putting RFID chips into iPhone 4G. RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) is a technology that will allow a device to sense embedded chips in nearby objects without making direct contact or even without using barcode scanner. There are wide range of uses of RFID feature, like using iPhone as a credit card, assisting in identifying lost devices, paying for mass transit, etc.
“A highly reliable source has informed me that Apple has built some prototypes of the next gen iPhone with an RFID reader built in and they have seen it in action. So its not full NFC but its a start for real service discovery and I’m told that the reaction was very positive that we can expect this in the next gen iPhone,” wrote Rosenberg.
“I’m told that the touch project video and the BT SIG’s specs were all driving forces to push this forward as well as other factors,” Rosenberg informs, adding, “Guess I’ll be touching my iPhone to my Mac to link them together to sync iTunes by next year.

Verizon’s Droid is a series, not just a phone; Droid Eris coming from HTC

We just got some wild information from a trusted source about Verizon’s Android strategy, and let’s just say this shakes things up a little bit. Here are the big takeaways:
* Droid is the brand name being applied to Verizon’s Android devices. It isn’t a single phone.
* The Sholes — the phone we’ve been calling the Droid so far — may simply be known as the Droid.
* HTC’s Desire will be coming to market as the “Droid Eris.” (Allow us to save you the Wikipedia lookup — Eris is the Greek goddess of strife.) Interestingly, it’s already up on gdgt as such.
* Droid Eris will be released — not announced, actually released — on November 6. In all likelihood, it will not be announced or shown at Verizon’s October 28 event — that will probably just be for the Sholes.

That’s all we’ve got so far, but it’s a heck of a change in plans, isn’t it? It’s interesting that Verizon will be applying a sub-brand to its Android line — and a pretty solid sign that Big Red’s got a serious commitment to the platform going forward.

iPhone – Coming Soon: A Mozilla App for the iPhone

Mozilla CEO John Lilly tells tech blogger Om Malik that the Firefox maker will “release an app to the iPhone App Store in the next few weeks,” and that “It’ll surprise people.”
About two years ago, Mozilla Labs announced a project called Weave, which was essentially a way for Firefox users to upload their personal browser preferences — from bookmarks to history to customizations — to Mozilla’s servers and then be able to access them from Firefox on any computer or device. Weave was going to become a key component of Mozilla Services.
it’ll be interesting in any case to see what Mozilla app Apple would approve for use on the iPhone. The iPhone maker has been pretty hostile toward anyone making apps that compete with what Apple thinks is the core functionality of its phone. And 330 million people know that Mozilla makes browsers and mail clients. Interestingly, Mozilla Weave is pretty competitive with Apple’s dot.mac service.
